It's that time of year where we reflect on where we have traveled to and begin planning for 2018. To help reflect we’ve selected 6 top travel bloggers and asked them about their favorite destinations of 2017. Here's what they had to say.
Our favorite destination this year was Slovenia
Slovenia was hands down our favorite travel destination this year. The country is covered in lush, green mountains and beautiful blue lakes, and there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and mountaineering. Not only are Slovenians incredibly fit from the abundance of outdoor activities available, they are also focused on healthy, organic eating and sustainability in order to protect the beautiful environment they live in. In fact, most Slovenians outside of the major cities grow their own produce at home and rarely visit grocery stores, as the freshest food can be found in their own backyard. If you value a healthy lifestyle, sustainability, and beautiful nature, there is no better place to visit in the world than Slovenia.
My favorite destination this year was Cuba
I traveled to Cuba in May, and it quickly became my favorite destination of 2017—for good reason. Cuba has a little bit of everything. Craving the city? A dash of chaos and excitement lives in Havana, a living, breathing entity adorned with history, culture, and color. When you inevitably start to crave the country, a short taxi drive will land you in beautiful places like Viñales, where you can rejuvenate your soul with salsa dancing, fresh mangoes, and yes, even an occasional cigar.
This amazing island is a destination unlike anything I've ever seen. If you haven't been yet, I highly recommend putting it on your travel list for next year.
My favorite destination this year was Gili Air
We weren’t content with simply visiting this small peanut island in the heart of Indonesia for our wedding anniversary, no! We loved it so much we returned two months later to make it our home!
For seven months we have lived on this sand island where there are no cars, no traffic and no stress. Locals are welcoming and friendly; they always say hello and ask how you are. Soft white sand is fringed with palm trees whilst warm aquamarine waters lap against the shore – ideal scuba diving and snorkeling conditions, I mean, do you need any more convincing? Is this the perfect island? You bet your bottom dollar it is!
My favorite destination this year has to be Bora Bora!
It’s been at the top of my Bucket List for as long as I’ve been traveling. I always wondered if it would live up to all the hype and needed to see it for myself. I'm happy to report that Bora Bora surpassed my expectations. As soon as you get off of the tiny plane you’ll feel you’ve been transported into paradise. The warm, turquoise water has a fluorescent glow that comes from within. Time stands still and you can finally relax and completely unwind in your overwater bungalow. What could be better than that?! :)
My favorite destination this year was Flanders, Belgium
Having visited many times before as a child, this was my first time actually exploring the Flanders region in Belgium properly and god was I smitten. From beautiful gothic cities like Ghent and Leuven, to the copious amounts of beer and frites, not to mention reconnecting with friends, I found it very hard to leave. Unquestionably the highlight for me was experiencing the surreal and infamous Carnival celebrations of Aalst, including dressing up in drag and partying in the main square until the early hours. Flanders may not be the most exotic destination but it’s one close to my heart.
My favorite destination this year was Bilbao, Spain
The city has so much to offer for every taste. For foodies, there are pintxos which is their version of tapas. For sports fans you can watch a soccer match in the state of the art San Mames stadium. Fans of engineering can see the UNESCO site, Viscaya bridge which was designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel. Bilbao even boasts its own Guggenheim museum. I will definitely be visiting Bilbao again in 2018!
Our favorite destination this year was Vilnius, Lithuania
Vilnius, Lithuania is not on most people’s radar, but it should be. This small capital city is easy to get around and has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It also has a great food and craft beer scene, with an emphasis on the local. What really struck us about Vilnius was the city’s creative vibe, the city seemed to be bursting with art on the streets to the walls of the boutique hotel we stayed in in the heart of the old town. Looking to visit Europe, not spend a fortune and enjoy a destination not overrun by tourists? Then head to Vilnius in 2018! You won’t regret it.
