Most of you reading this have probably heard of Macau as it’s famous for a couple of reasons. First, it’s similar to Hong Kong in that it’s a former European colony (Portuguese) that was returned to China in the late ’90s and today functions as a special administrative region of China. Second, it’s known as the Las Vegas of Asia and gambling here is big business, and I mean BIG. For instance, the casinos in Macau brought in an estimated $28 billion (USD) in 2017, compared to the $11 billion by casinos in Las Vegas that same year. Third, and most relevant to this post is that the tiny territory of 33 square kilometers (12.7 sq miles) received an astounding 35.8 million visitors in 2018 placing it among the top destinations in the world.
As I wrote in our guide to San Francisco, I went to undergrad in the Bay Area, so we couldn’t take a trip to San Francisco without visiting my alma mater-UC Berkeley. After nearly ten years of talking about Berkeley to Albert, I finally got the chance to show him the campus and some, unfortunately not all, of my favorite parts of the city.
We could literally see Anguilla from our room in Grand Case, Saint Martin, and the Bonds are never ones to pass up the opportunity to visit a new country or territory, so we decided to take a day trip to Anguilla.
We traveled north from Burlington, Vermont to our friends’ lake house on Lake Memphremagog in the province of Quebec, Canada. On our way there we decided to go a little out of our way to visit Montreal. Neither of us had been and we simply couldn't miss an opportunity to catch a glimpse of what the city had to offer. In short, Montreal is awesome and we will have to go back. We didn’t even scratch the surface of this vibrant city.
Looking to explore more of Lithuania than just Vilnius, Carrie and I decided to take a day trip to the country’s second city - Kaunas. Kaunas is Lithuania’s cultural hub and served temporarily as the capital of the country when Vilnius was occupied by the Russian Bolsheviks in 1919.
Lebanon is of course so much more than Beirut. If you have the time during your visit we highly recommend you travel outside of the bustling capital. During our recent trip to Lebanon we opted for a guided day trip with Lebanon Tours to Anjar, Baalbek and Chateau Ksara all in the Beqaa Valley.
